Still Image Originals

Front Cover Photos

For the front cover, I required two photos: The background image of the artist (left), and then the photo he would be holding up (right). I decided to use Photoshop to merge the two together rather than using a prop, due to the practicality it would provide for me, and giving me more freedom in the creativity. A big reason I chose to digitally create the image was because it would allow me to attempt and match the two photographs together as best as I could. The photograph designed for the original to hold up was taken on an iPhone camera, using an application to provide the polaroid border for it. Another reason for using the iPhone was it would provide a less quality, grainier image than the professional camera used on the left, which I thought would provide a good effect as the image is supposed to be the artist revealing his new style, and the 'polaroid' photo he is holding up representing his old style. Before digitally merging the two photos together, I used a variation of ways to improve the quality of the two photos, and I used colour correction to match the backgrounds better. After doing this I merged the two images together and matched them (including shoulders and jacket opening), creating the final image for my front cover (below).

Contents page photos
For my contents page, I used simple photos of just the artists. which is in tone with a lot of music magazines which will use a picture of a band featured inside that will both grab the attention of readers familiar with the artists, but also convince people who aren't to read the articles based on them.

Double Page Spread photo
I chose to create a simple image once again for the double page spread, but trying to use the poses and lighting to attract attention. This is also the only image where I had more than one person involved, albeit that one was much more focused upon than the other. While a simplistic photo, I needed to think about it quite a lot, as it represented an artist active in the late 70's/ early 80's, so costume was thought about, making sure no clothes seemed out of place. For the final double page spread, this picture was ultimately flipped horizontally to help the flow of the spread.
