Plans for Magazine

During the planning stage of the magazine, I sketched out some plans for the different pages I would be expected to create. Although rough, they will give me a rough idea of where to aim while making the final product, especially with the shot plans.

Front Page
For the front page, I tried to combine elements from more sophisticated, older generation magazines such as Classic Rock and Rolling Stone, which are in line with the genre I want to target, but still attempt to attract a wider audience. In doing this I've kept the top three quarters clear, allowing for a lot of focus onto the main headline and the brand of the magazine, but kept the bottom quarter on attracting more readers through highlighting other articles inside of the magazine.

Contents page
On the contents page, I've stuck to the general rule of thirds seen in most music magazines. I've kept the left third for a detailing of the magazine, and an editors note, since the magazine will be new, and this might succeed at drawing in some new readers. I have a main image of the main article in the right two thirds along with the page number, band name and summary of the article with it, to highlight the importance of the main article. Underneath, in the two thirds, there are more highlights to show variety and, obviously, help navigate the magazine.

Double page spread

On the left side of the page, I have spent half the page with the title of the article to attract in attention, with a brief summary below to gain more interest in the article. The summary is likely to be vague, yet interesting enough for people to move on. Also under that is the credit for the text, and at the bottom of the page barely visible is the credit for the photograph used on the right page. The text is once again laid out in columns while sticking to the rule of thirds. On the right page is the main image which will take up the entirety of the page, along with a grab quote pulled from the article, and a small explanatory caption of the image in the upper right corner. This is in line with the usual conventions of most music magazines, and will definitely pull in people not only who are already reading the magazine, but if anyone was flicking through before buying it, it will also attract their attention.
